2017: More Apple Security Flaws, Cyberattacks, Hacktivisim

Image
More security vulnerabilities will appear in the software of Adobe and Apple than in Microsoft's, more attacks on the Internet's infrastructure will occur, and cybersecurity events will stoke international tensions. Those are a few of the predictions for 2017 that security experts shared with TechNewsWorld. Users of Apple desktops and laptops for years have been relatively insulated from the kinds of malicious activity that has besieged those in the Windows world, but that's going to change next year, warned  Trend Micro . More software flaws will affect Adobe and Apple in 2017, compared to Microsoft, the company noted in a security predictions report. Declining PC sales and an exodus to mobile platforms have dampened interest in targeting devices running Windows, Trend Micro explained. Microsoft also has upped its security game in recent times, which has made it more difficult for attackers to find vulnerabilities in Windows. Follow the Money Signs of

Samsung May Unleash a Beast

Image
Hot off the rumor mill on Wednesday is news of a new feature Samsung may include in its upcoming Galaxy S8. It's dubbed "Beast Mode," and that's just about all that is known about it so far. Spotted in an EU trademark application, Beast Mode would apply to smartphones, mobile phones and application software for smartphones, noted  Galaxy Club , a Netherlands-based blog. The Galaxy S8 is expected to be the first smartphone built around Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor. If true, that lines up with the notion that Beast Mode could allow super high performance. Another rumor is that the Galaxy S8 will have an optical fingerprint scanner built into the display instead of the body. Further, it's rumored that it will include Bluetooth 5.0, recently approved by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group -- and that idea seems to carry a fair amount of weight. Countering Bad PR "There's a strong possibility that Samsung will incorporate Blueto

Forget the 1 billion passwords!

It’s business as usual at Yahoo, with another   massive account breach   that impacts over one billion users. The first massive (but smaller in scale–“only”   500 million ) breach was disclosed in September, but surprisingly, the latest breach actually occurred in 2013. And we’re being told now? Really? Clearly  Yahoo does care more about their PR than your security . I suppose it makes sense for Marissa Mayer, the CEO who stepped into her role in July 2012. That would be bad PR for her too. Where does a company go from here? Needless to say, the breach might make the future of the company uncertain. Earlier this year, Verizon announced  plans to acquire  Yahoo for $4.8 billion. Can you hear me now, Verizon? Is that still the case? Was the breach disclosed to the Verizon board at the time, or are we all finding out at the same time? Verizon execs likely are just as shell-shocked as we are. Already on the heels of the earlier disclosed hack in September, Verizon  req

DDoS attack on European Commission may be first of many

DDoS attacks are becoming more complex and also far more prevalent in each passing year. It is one of the few attacks that can be effectively utilized by script kiddies and black hat hackers alike. Popular targets for DDoS have always involved government entities, be it a single country or an international body. The latest international organization to be hit came on Nov. 24, when the European Commission was targeted by a DDoS attack. As reported by  Politico , in the afternoon of Nov. 24, European Commission servers began experiencing “millions of requests” for website access, which then alerted the EC’s IT team. Additionally the network gateways at the European Commission — which is the executive body of the European Union — came under an attack that effectively cut Internet access for all employees. The incident was handed over to CERT-EU for greater study of the attack and its origins. The DIGIT team at the European Commission has more or less eliminated the effects of the DD

iOS 10.2 security patches biggest thing, not silly Emojis

Image
iOS 10.2 is finally released, and so made it before Christmas. Apple has worked hard on this update to get it out, but we do worry that too much emphasis has been put on the TV app and Emojis rather than security patches, which should always be the biggest thing. A growing number of people said that if Apple were to put as much effort into key areas of iOS than they do silly Emojis, then they would start to have far more faith in them. The thing is, the iOS 10.2 update includes several other features, such as additional camera features, new Messages screen effects and so much more, yet all Apple seems to care about are Emojis. The irony here is that it tends to take you longer to scroll though to find the correct Emoji rather than just typing out the message you wish to convey. We are now giving iOS 10.2 a try on our iPhone 7 as we speak, but what we really wanted to know was whether this rectified the issue with later iPhone 6s models shutting down that was not part of the

Google WiFi is available now! (But you’ll have to wait)

Image
Google WiFi is a mesh-based wireless router that uses multiple access-points to create a wider, stronger signal that’s more tolerant to wireless interference that’s common in a household. In addition, the router automatically configures to join the least congested channel, the fastest wireless band (2.4 or 5GHz, based on your distance from the router), automatically hands your connection off seamlessly from point to point, can be managed via your smartphone. Google’s really gone all out to make setting up a network as fool-proof as possible; I feel it should be noted, though that if for some reason you need a wired connection, you’ll need to purchase a switch or two with this router – Google’s baby really focuses on wireless networks, with only one outbound Ethernet port. Much understated. So purdy. Wow. These access-points are sold in packs of one ($129, ideal for up to a 1500 square foot home), or three ($300, up 4000 square feet), meaning you shouldn’t have a problem p

Moto ‘Cedric’ Could Be First Motorola Phone To Run Android 7.0 Out The Box

Image
The problem with Android phones is that despite many of them being released after the latest build of Android has been made available, they tend to come with the previous version installed. This means that users will still have to wait for the update to find its way to their device, which can be frustrating as sometimes this can take a while. That being said, this year we’re starting to see a change with handsets like the LG V20 and HTC Bolt being some of the first non-Pixel/Nexus devices with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. However it looks like Motorola could soon be adding their name to the list because according to a tweet by Roland Quandt (via PhoneArena), Motorola has a device in the works codenamed “Cedric” that will come with Nougat preinstalled. According to Quandt’s tweet, the model numbers for the phone are XT1670, XT1671, XT1675, and XT1676. It will come with 2GB of RAM and 16/32GB storage options. We’re also looking at a 2,800mAh battery. These definitely do not

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey on President-elect Donald Trump’s tweets: It’s ‘complicated’

Image
President-elect Donald Trump loves Twitter, as anyone might surmise from the billionaire’sfrequentfleet-fingeredmicrofits. But how does Twitter feel about @realDonaldTrump? That was the question posed to Jack Dorsey, Twitter cofounder and CEO, at the Recode Code Commerce conference in San Francisco, Calif on Tuesday evening. “Uh,” Dorsey grinned, conceding to answer the query after several failed attempts at dodging. “Complicated,” he replied. “I feel very proud of the role of the service and what it stands for,” Dorsey continued circumspectly. “It’s had such a spotlight on it through his usage and through the election.” Pressed on what exactly he found “complicated,” Dorsey brought up on the unusual dynamics that arise from having such a prominent figure regularly post his thoughts to the site ex tempore. “What does this mean to have a direct line to how he’s thinking in real-time and to see that?” Dorsey mused. “I’m not sure.” “We certainly play a big part in distributing ne
